The Falcons continue the three-match home stint against UTRGV in the non-conference finale on September 18. Action against the Vaqueros is scheduled for 6 pm MT. This season marks the first in many that AF and UTRGV are not conference foes. The Vaqueros are now affiliates of the Ohio Valley Conference.
A LOOK AT UTRGV
The Vaqueros will take the pitch under the command of head coach Bryheem Hancock in his sixth season at the helm of the program.
The Vaqueros are coming to USAFA off a two-nil road loss at Oral Roberts. They picked up wins in Florida; scoring a 3-2 win at West Florida and routing South Florida, 5-0.
Taj Ellis leads the offense with two goals and two assists while Sammy Jadid and Mouhamed Pouye have two strikes and a help each. Knight Conrad has clocked every minute in goal this season. He has a .545 save percentage and a 1.25 GAA.
GETTING ON THE RIGHT TRACK
Despite an upsetting loss to UC Riverside last weekend, the Falcons scored a transition goal in just the fourth minute via connection from Hunter Anderson to Quinn Muderlak. It was the second time AF scored first this season. They went on to hold UCR scoreless until the 71st minute. They doubled the Highlanders on shots taken (15/7), making it the third time they've outshot an opponent this season.
SET PIECE GOALS
Air Force has five goals this season, three of which originated from a set piece. Sophomore team captain Tucker Kern notched the first goal of the season in a free kick at Army, August 20. At Saint Mary's, the first goal came by way of free kick where C4C Xidane Espinoza chipped a deflected shot to C4C Doran Farrell who headed the ball off crossbar which deflected to Logan Zaa who had his header blocked to freshman teammate Hector Orozco who finished low center for his first collegiate goal. The second strike happened when Menes Ajyeman lined up and took a shot that was deflected by an SMC defender into the possession of Kern who capitalized with a rocket to the right side of the frame from 22 yards out.
CHASING W
Despite three positive results ending in draws, Air Force is gunning for their first win since beating Mercer, 2-0, last season on September 11. The Falcons are 0-12-5 since their last win.
UP NEXT
The Falcons finish up a three-game home stint in the Mountain West Conference opener against Utah Tech on Saturday, September 26. Last time they played, Utah Tech scored four goals and a clean sheet on the Falcons.
LAST TIME OUT
The Highlanders of UC Riverside rallied to a win against Air Force, 2-1, Friday evening at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Despite the result, the Falcons played with intensity, charisma, and determination for 90 minutes— testament to the positive trajectory of the program.
The Falcons got off to a fiery start with a transition goal in the fourth minute, marking the speediest goal for AF this season. Hunter Anderson, Air Force's freshman goalkeeper, sent a quality goal kick down range to Quinn Muderlak in stride. Muderlak, a preseason Mountain West Player to Watch, tracked the ball in sprint and chipped it off his right toe over the UCR keeper for a goal. The strike marked the first for Muderlak this season while Anderson was credited with an impressive GK assist.
Air Force, controlling possessions and taking 15 shots on the match, fended off the Highlanders for 70 minutes before UCR was able to score the equalizer. Andrija Radonjic scored his first goal of the season off a lucky deflection to knot the match at one.
With the match tied, UCR was booked three yellow cards between the 76th and 85th minute, sucking the wind out of the stadium. In the wake of the dull moment, UCR put together a quality attack for the eventual game-winner in the 85th minute.
