
Huntington and Halloran lead Falcons on first day in Boulder

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Senior team captain Eli Huntington and freshman Jack Halloran led the Air Force golf team on the opening day of the 16th annual Mark Simpson Invitational, hosted by the University of Colorado, Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the Boulder Country Club in Boulder, Colo. The teams played 36 holes on the opening day.
In his first collegiate tournament as a member of the team, Halloran shot a three-over 73 in the first round. In the second round, he made six birdies for a career-low 67 (-3). After 36 holes, he sits at 140 (Even) after 36 holes. In five collegiate rounds this season, he has three of them in the 60's.
Huntington opened the tournament with a one-under-par 69. His opening round included an eagle on the par-5, 561-yard 12th hole when he hit his second shot to five feet from the pin and made the putt. He made four birdies in the second round for a one-over 71. After 36 holes, he sits at 140 (Even).
Senior Carson Baker birdied five of seven holes in the opening round for an even-par 70. In the second round, Baker made 14 pars for a 71 (+1). After 36 holes, he is at 141 (+1).
Halloran and Huntington are tied for 37th overall, while Baker is tied for 39th.
Sophomore Ben Zeiler made four birdies in the first round for an even-par 70 and is at 145 (+5) for the tournament. Senior Grant Samuelson sits at 147 (+7) after the first two rounds.
After the 36 holes, Air Force is tied for 12th at 564 (+4). The Falcons shot back-to-back rounds of 282 (+2). Air Force is tied with Utah State and is currently ahead of Boise State, Colorado State, Wyoming and Utah Valley entering the final round. Long Beach State leads the tournament at 538 (-22). Arkansas State is second at 541 (-19) and Colorado is third at 547 (-13).
The final 18 holes of the Mark Simpson Invitational will be on Wednesday, Sept. 30, with tee times beginning at 7:30 am MT off of No. 1 and No. 10.
Three Falcons competed as individuals in the third annual Les Fowler Invitational, also hosted by the University of Colorado, Sept. 28-29, at Bear Creek Golf Club in Denver, Colo. Freshman Daniel Chazen tied for 31st at 231 (+15), shooting 77-75-79. Senior Karson Knox shot 236 and freshman Grant Baer shot 237.
