THIS WEEK: The Air Force golf team travels north for a pair of tournaments, Sept. 28-30. The team will compete in the 16th annual Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational, Tuesday-Wednesday, Sept. 29-30, at the Boulder Country Club in Boulder, Colo. Air Force will have three individuals playing in the third annual Les Fowler-Colorado Invitational, Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 28-29, at Bear Creek Golf Club in Denver, Colo.

THE FORMAT: The team event at the Boulder Country Club will begin with a shotgun start at 8:15 am MT on Tuesday, Sept. 29, for continuous 36 holes. The final 18 holes will be played on Wednesday, Sept. 30, with tee times beginning at 7:30 am on No. 1 and No. 10. For the individual event at Bear Creek Golf Course, golfers will play continuous 36 holes with a shotgun start at 8:00 am MT on Monday, Sept. 28. The final 18 holes will be Tuesday, Sept. 29 with tee times beginning at 11:30 am MT.
THE FIELD: Along with Air Force, the 17-team for the Mark Simpson Invitational field includes Arkansas State, Boise State, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Long Beach State, Missouri-Kansas City, Nevada, Northern Colorado, Pacific, San Diego, UTEP, Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley and Wyoming,
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: Mark Simpson served as Colorado's head coach for 29 years (1977-2005), until he passed away at the age of 55 on Dec. 5, 2005; he was inducted earlier that year into the GCAA Hall of Fame. This tournament was created by current CU head coach Roy Edwards in his honor and began in 2010 (no event in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic). Les Fowler preceded Simpson as head coach, also for 29 years (1948-1976) before retiring; he is in both the CU Athletic Hall of Fame, the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. The individual event, the first of which occurred in 2019 between individuals from Air Force, CU, CSU, DU and UNC is named in his honor.
THE FALCON LINEUP: 1- Grant Samuelson; 2-Ben Zeiler; 3-Carson Baker; 4-Eli Huntington; 5-Jack Halloran; Individuals: Grant Baer, Karson Knox and Daniel Chazen.
LAST TIME AT MARK SIMPSON: Air Force last competed in the Mark Simpson, Oct. 1, 2024. Eli Huntington was the top Falcon over the 54-hole tournament, tying for 36th of 104 golfers with a two-under 214 (72-71-71). Air Force shot a 290 (+2) in the final round and placed 16th with a three-round team score of 876 (+12). Colorado State won the tournament with an 828 (-36). The host school, Colorado, was second at 831 (-33) followed by Wyoming with an 834.
LAST WEEK: Air Force placed eighth at the 57th Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, Monday, Sept. 21, at the Eisenhower Blue Course. Air Force shot a 54-hole team total of 864 (Even), the best team score by the Falcons at the GMFI since an 862 (-2) in 2019. Colorado won the 2026 team event at 834 (-30). Denver and UTEP tied for second at 849 (-15). Senior Grant Samuelson was the top Falcon over 54 holes, finishing tied for ninth with a career-best 212 (-4), shooting 70-68-74. Sophomore Ben Zeiler tied for 32nd overall at 217 (+1), going 71-71-75. Senior Carson Baker finished at 219, followed by senior Eli Huntington (222) and freshman Daniel Chazen (224). In the individual event on the Academy's Eisenhower Silver Course, freshman Jack Halloran tied for ninth at 213 (-3), shooting 69-75-69. Freshman Grant Baer tied for 12th at 217 (+1), shooting 76-70-71. Senior Karson Knox shot 235.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Sophomore Ben Zeiler leads the team with a 73.67 season stroke average, playing all six rounds this season. Seniors Eli Huntington and Grant Samuelson are tied for second (74.50) and senior Carson Baker is fourth (74.67).
UP NEXT: Following the Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational, Air Force will battle Army and Navy in the Commander-in-Chief's Cup, Oct. 13-14, at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.
