ALL-TIME VERSUS THE MINERS
Air Force and UTEP have met five times, with the Falcons still searching for their first victory in the all-time series. Air Force holds a 0-4-1 record against the Miners with the inaugural meeting ending in a 1-1 draw in 1996. The former WAC opponents will now meet for the first time as Mountain West competitors.
LAST TIME OUT
Air Force women's soccer (6-3-1) fell 2-0 to Mountain West newcomer Hawai'i (4-4-1) Sunday afternoon at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Despite outshooting the Rainbow Wahine, 22-12, the Falcons were unable to find the back of the net.
Chase Borntreger led the Falcons with two shots on goal, while Kendall Rippley, Lauren Steinlage, Maddy Walsh, Mai Mateaki, Nalei Shannon, Melissa Araujo, Sammi Kinoshita and Annika Jost each recorded one shot on frame.
In goal, Sydney Nelms recorded three saves while allowing two goals.
Air Force controlled much of the possession in the opening half, firing seven shots, including three on goal. Nelms came up with a pair of saves to keep the match scoreless heading into the break.
The Falcons came out attacking in the second half, registering three shots and earning two corners in the 49th minute, but could not capitalize. Hawai'i broke through in the 53rd minute when a shot sailed over Nelms and into the net to give the Rainbow Wahine a 1-0 lead.
Hawai'i added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute after a deflected shot found the top-right corner of the net, pushing the 'Bow's lead to 2-0.
AIR FORCE IN THE MOUNTAIN WEST
Air Force currently leads the Mountain West in goals (21) and are second in goals per game (2.10), shots (162) and saves (50). Sydney Nelms ranks second in the league in saves (42) and saves per game (5.25).
Annika Jost ranks sixth in the Mountain West in points per game (1.10), seventh in shots per game (2.30 and shots (23), as well as eighth in points (11). Jost and Maddy Walsh are tied for eighth in the league in goals (4) and goals per game (.40).
DILLINGHAM DOES IT ALL
Defender Jordan Dillingham has made her presence felt on both sides of the ball this season, emerging as one of Air Force's most productive offensive threats. Dillingham ranks second on the team with three goals while adding an assist for seven total points. She has played the full 90 minutes in seven matches and has recorded 10 shots on the season.
Dillingham has proven especially dangerous on set pieces, with all three of her goals coming off corner kicks. She found the back of the net against Army, Navy and UC Davis, showcasing her ability to turn opportunities in the box into offensive production. While her primary responsibilities come on the defensive end, Dillingham has become a key target on corner kicks and a consistent threat around the goal.
FALCONS IN THE FINAL THIRD
Air Force has wasted little time putting pressure on opposing defenses, firing off 162 shots through 10 matches, including 74 on target, while finding the back of the net 21 times. The Falcons have generated chances from across the attacking third, with Annika Jost and Kendall Rippley leading the team with 23 and 19 shots, respectively. Maddy Walsh follows with 18 attempts, while Chase Borntreger has added 16.
The Falcons have outscored their opponents 21-12 and have been more of a second-half team, scoring 15 goals after halftime, compared to six in the first half.
A LOOK AT UTEP
The Miners hold a record of 7-1-3 and a conference mark of 1-1. So far, they have only dropped to UNLV (2-1) in their first Mountain West match. Six of UTEP's wins were just by one goal and five of which were shutouts, as they have outscored opponents 17-6. Offensively, Zeta McDannels leads with 12 points and six goals, while four other Miners have recorded two goals apiece. In goal, Savanah Finley has made 34 saves for a save percentage of .850 through her 11 matches.
