Air Force Splits Saturday Games at Navy Open

Air Force men's water polo (5-3) split a pair of Saturday games at the Navy Open at Lejeune Hall on the Annapolis Campus as the Naval Academy. The Falcons fell to #12 Princeton, 20-9, and then rallied to defeat Johns Hopkins 15-14 in triple overtime.

In the opener, Princeton took an early 5-2 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The Tigers led 11-5 at the half and went on to outscore the Falcons 9-4 in the second half. Senior Jonah Vander Veen and sophomore Max Ellis led the Falcons with two goals each in the game.

In the JHU game, the Falcons rallied back from a three-goal deficit to pull out the win in sudden-death, triple overtime.

Air Force led 4-1 after the first quarter and 9-6 at the half. Johns Hopkins out-scored the Falcons 6-2 in the third quarter to go up 12-11. Down 12-9, the Falcons got the final two goals of the period to pull to within one.

Air Force got the first two goals of the fourth to go back ahead 13-12, before JHU tied it up at 13-13. The teams played the final 6:30 of the fourth quarter without a goal to send the game to overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, JHU got on the board in the second overtime with a goal at the 2:26 mark. Freshman Sam Storrs then got the equalizer at the 1:53 mark.

In the sudden-death third period, it was Storrs with the game-winner with 39 seconds left in the quarter to help lift the Falcons to the win.

Air Force returns to action Sunday at the Navy Open taking on Mount St. Mary's and George Washington.
