Jon Thompson enters his fourth season in 2023-24 after completing his third season at the Air Force Academy, and first as Associate Head Coach. Thompson was promoted from Assistant to Associate Head Coach in July 2022 after two successful seasons with the program. Serving as the offensive coordinator for three years, Thompson has helped the Air Force offense record two of the three most successful seasons on record at the Academy. In 2022, the offense finished with 11.13 goals per game average. In 2023, the Air Force offense finished with 12.12 goals per game average, ranking first all time in the modern era. Under Thompson’s leadership, the offense has increased shooting percentage in each of his three seasons at Air Force, in addition to the extra man offense ranking within the top twenty nationally for much of the 2022 and 2023 seasons. In 2023, the Air Force offense ranked 23rd in raw offensive efficiency, according to lacrossereference.com.
While at Air Force, Thompson has helped mentor the ASUN player of the year in 2023, Brandon Dodd, to two of the most prolific point totals for a single season in Air Force history. In 2022, Dodd scored 77 points and in 2023, he finished with 76 points, ranking 1st and 2nd respectively. Thompson also helped develop Aidan Tolan into a 1st Team all ASUN midfielder in 2023, and Brendan Crouse as a 2nd team All ASUN midfielder in 2022. Along with those accolades, he has helped develop four members of the all freshman team. In 2022, Thompson coached two 50-point scorers on the same team for the first time in Air Force history.
Beyond lacrosse, Thompson regularly uses his Master’s degree in Sports Psychology to help mentor members of the Air Force Lacrosse team with performance enhancement, mental skill development, and mental fitness as it relates to sport performance.
