Dustin Imdieke is in his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Air Force track and field program, after joining the team in November 2021. A National Assistant Coach of the Year at the NCAA Division II level, Imdieke oversees the Falcons’ hurdles and horizontal jumps.
Imdieke had an impressive debut season with the Falcons in 2022, as Air Force Records from Katie Thompson (indoor long jump, 20’3”) and Michelle Roca (400-meter hurdles, 59.81) bookended a year that included eight additional improvements to the program’s Top 10, Thompson setting a new All-Academy Record with her 20’3” long jump, five all-conference performances – including two of the three medalists in the men’s 400-meter hurdles at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships – and three NCAA Qualifiers.
That success continued into 2023, as Imdieke saw Cameron Harris earn All-America status in the 110-meter hurdles and the dynamic duo of Darek Hackett and Cameron Breier finish 1-2 in the 400-meter hurdles at the MW Outdoor Championships to help the men sweep the team title for the second-straight year. He sent three athletes to the opening round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, while Harris’ program-record hurdles time of 13.56 marked the fastest time ever by a service academy athlete. Backed by the 1-2 finish in the 400-meter hurdles, his event group combined for five medals at the conference meets.
This past season was a banner year for Imdieke and his athletes, as Hackett (400-meter hurdles) and Brandon Lindner (outdoor long jump) reset long-stranding Academy Records, Hackett and Breier teamed up for another 1-2 finish at the Mountain West Championships, and all three qualified to the NCAA Outdoor Championships – where Hackett advanced out of the opening weekend to collect honorable mention All-America honors. Imdieke also saw Hackett, whose 50.03 record in the intermedia hurdles is the fastest ever by a service academy athlete, represent the Academy at the U.S. Olympic Trials. On the women’s side, he saw his youngest athletes impact the program’s all-time standings in the long jump and ball three hurdle events
Imdieke came to the Academy following four successful years at Adams State University in Alamosa, where he coached the sprint, hurdle and jump athletes and served as the meet director for all home competitions at the ASU High Altitude Training Center. During his time with the Grizzlies, Imdieke helped Adams State to nine top-three team finishes at the NCAA Division II Championships, including four NCAA DII team titles. Imdieke, who was named the NCAA DII National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2019, coached five DII national champions (four individuals, one relay), 22 All-Americans, 20 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) champions and five school record holders.
Prior to joining the staff at Adams State, Imdieke served as the sprint coach for Altis (2012-2017) and a team coach for Norsk Friidrett (2015-17), where he saw his athletes compete at the 2017 USATF Outdoor Championships, the 2017 USATF Indoor Championships, the 2017 European Indoor Championships, the 2016 Rio Olympics, the 2016 European Outdoor Championships, and the 2015 IAAF World Championships.
Imdieke began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach for the hurdles and multi-event athletes at Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix, Ariz., - a position he held from 2008-14, while also serving as a fitness instructor at Glendale Community College (2008-17). During his time at Paradise Valley, Imdieke saw his athletes set 10 school records.
A presenter at several coaching clinics, Imdieke received his degree in kinesiology from Indiana State University in 2008, before earning a Masters in that discipline from A.T. Still University in 2012. He and his wife, Amber, have three children – Dalton, Tatum, and Adilyn.
