JUNIOR YEAR | 2022-23: Debuted on the program’s Top 10 in three throwing events…shared the team’s Laura Piper Ironman Award…all-conference honoree…scored for the Falcons at the Mountain West Championships in every contested throwing event…entered the Air Force Outdoor Top 10 during runner-up performances in the hammer throw (career-best 198’1”, No. 7 all-time) and discus throw (career-best 178’1”, No. 8 all-time) at the Doug Max Invitational…also posted a personal-best throw of 53’6¼” to debut at No. 20 on the program standings in the outdoor shot put at that meet…earned top-eight finishes in all four throwing events at the MW Outdoor Championships, finishing fourth in the hammer throw (188’7”), fifth in the discus throw (177’10”), sixth in the javelin throw (career-best 178’5”) and eighth in the shot put (53’3¾”)…became the 13th Falcon in program history to surpass the 60-foot distance in the weight throw during a career-best 61’7” performance at the MW Indoor Championships (No. 7 all-time)…used that throw to finish third for first all-MW nod…academic all-conference selection…MW Scholar-Athlete.
SOPHOMORE YEAR | 2021-22: Participated in all six throwing events…ranked second on the team in the discus throw after recording a personal-best 167’0” at the Fresno State Invitational…posted career-best marks in the hammer throw (173’8”) and javelin (170’0”) at the Air Force Twilight Open…added a season-best distance of 46’10¼” in the outdoor shot put at the Mt SAC Relays…posted a career-best indoor throw of 51’10” to finish fourth at the Texas Tech Open…added top-five finishes in the shot put at the Air Force Collegiate Open (51’9¾”, third) and Potts Invitational (51’2¾”, fourth)…recorded a personal-best toss of 52’2¾” in the weight throw at the Don Kirby Invitational…academic all-conference selection.
FRESHMAN YEAR | 2020-21: Competed in four throwing events…registered the second-best throws on the team in the shot put (49’5”, Jack Christiansen Invitational) and hammer (163’4”, Air Force Twilight Open) during the outdoor season…added a career-best 152’0” in the discus at the Twilight Open…recorded an indoor-best shot put of 45’10½” during collegiate debut (Air Force Holiday Open)…posted a career-best distance of 46’3½” in the weight throw at the UCCS Open…academic all-conference selection.
HIGH SCHOOL: Rocky Mountain High School...state champion in the discus...registered a prep-best throw of 170’4” to win the Idaho 5A title as a junior...recorded throws over 160 feet in seven additional meets...also finished second in the shot put at the state meet that year after recording a prep-best distance of 54’6”...member of two state championship track and field teams...also played on the football team...three-time all-conference selection as an offensive lineman...also claimed all-state honors at that position twice...member of the 2018 team that won the state title...scored 1390 on the SAT and 32 on the ACT...graduated with a 4.0 GPA.
PERSONAL: Full name is Gerrit Irving Tamminga...son of Bob and Ellen Tamminga...both parents were student-athletes at Northwest Nazarene College (father: basketball and soccer; mother: basketball and track)...has one younger sibling...majoring in management…future plans include going into the contracting field…named to the Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s List...hobbies include hiking, hunting and music...grandfather served in the Air Force in the 1950s…served as cadre for Falcon Sports Camps over the summer...member of Cadet Squadron 40.
