JUNIOR YEAR | 2020-21: Claimed the program’s Laura Piper Ironman Award…impacted the Academy’s all-time standings in five events…set an Air Force and Mountain West decathlon sub-event record in the 100-meter dash at the MW Outdoor Championships (10.48)…that time is also ranked fourth on the Academy’s all-time list…posted the ninth-highest decathlon total in program history (7026) to finish third at the conference meet and earn all-MW honors…claimed the top finish in four events at that meet…added career-best marks in the high jump (6’4¼”) and javelin throw (130’6”)…debuted on the program’s all-time standings with a 6810-point performance at the Jim Click Decathlon…tallied career-best marks in the long jump (team-leading 23’3¼”), shot put (33’7¼”), 400-meter dash (48.15) and discus throw (119’3”)…earned the team’s Field Athlete of the Week award following that meet…also recorded personal-best performances in the 110-meter hurdles (14.97, Baylor Invitational) and pole vault (14’1¼”, Air Force Twilight Open) during the outdoor season...member of two relays that impacted the program’s all-time standings…anchored the 4x400-meter relay that clocked the fourth-fastest time in program history (3:09.66) at the Baylor Invitational and led off the 4x200-meter relay that posted the Academy’s fifth-fastest time (1:26.12) at the Drake Relays…accounted for the fifth-highest heptathlon total in program history (5343) during the indoor season…used that score to finish second at the Championships at the Peak meet…tallied career-best marks in six of the seven events during that meet – 60-meter dash (6.81), long jump (23’0¾”), shot put (35’0½”), high jump (6’6¾”), 60-meter hurdles (8.39), pole vault (14’1¼”)…the 60-meter and long jump marks were the best on the team in 2021.
SOPHOMORE YEAR | 2019-20: Mountain West Indoor champion in the heptathlon...registered the seventh-highest total in Academy history (5170) to win the program’s first conference heptathlon title in 14 years...that total is also a new Sophomore Class record...all-conference honoree...top finisher in four of the seven events...set or matched career-best marks in the 60-meter dash (6.93), shot put (34’8¼”), 60-meter hurdles (8.45), pole vault (12’9½”) and 1000-meter run (2:46.97) at the conference meet...hurdles time was the second-fastest mark on the team in 2020...received the team’s Alonzo Babers Outstanding Performance award for heptathlon victory...first recorded personal-best clearance in the pole vault at the Air Force Collegiate Open...also won the heptathlon at the Air Force Invitational, posting a then-best tally of 4780 points...registered a team-leading, career-best long jump distance of 23’0” at that meet...posted a personal-best height of 6’6¾” to earn the top collegiate finish (second overall) at the Air Force Holiday Open...also won the long jump at that meet (22’11”).
FRESHMAN YEAR | 2018-19: Set the Academy’s Freshman Class Record in the decathlon with a 6504-point outing at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships...scored for Air Force in that event after finishing sixth...tallied career-best marks in the 400-meter dash (48.66), 1500-meter run (4:40.88), pole vault (11’3¾”), long jump (22’4¼”), shot put (29’8¼”) and discus throw (111’7”) at that meet...made decathlon debut with a winning performance at the Jim Click Decathlon (6278)...collected personal-best marks in the 100-meter dash (10.93), high jump (6’3½”) and javelin throw (145’1”) in that competition...claimed first-place finishes in three sub-events, en route to the overall victory...named Mountain West Field Athlete of the Week following that meet...ranked second on the team in the 110-meter hurdles after posting a career-best time of 15.45 at the Air Force Twilight Open...scored for the Falcons in the long jump at the MW Indoor Championships...posted a team-leading, career-best distance of 22’11” to finish seventh at that meet...competed in the heptathlon once during the season, tallying 4248 points at the Air Force Invitational...recorded personal-best performances in the 1000-meter run (3:07.81) and pole vault (10’10”) during that meet...picked up career-best marks in the high jump (5’10¾”) and shot put (27’5½”) at the UCCS Mountain Lion Open...matched the high jump clearance the following week at the Air Force Collegiate Open...tallied career-best marks in both 60-meter events in Boulder (dash: 7.03 at the Colorado Invitational; hurdles: 9.02 at the Potts Invitational).
HIGH SCHOOL: Poplar Bluff High School...three-time all-state selection as a member of the 4x100-meter relay...finished second at the Missouri state championships in the 200-meter dash (21.95)...conference, district and sectional championship in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter events...finished eighth in the decathlon at the Great Southwest Classic as a junior and senior...recorded a career-best 5853 points at the 2018 meet...claimed a second-place regional finish in the decathlon...lettered in academics all four years...maintained a 4.12 GPA...ranked fifth out of 343 students in graduating class.
PERSONAL: Full name is John Wyatt Murphy...goes by Wyatt...son of Jerrod and Beth Murphy...has three sisters (one older, two younger) and two nieces...majoring in systems aeronautical engineering...future plans include becoming a pilot and flying “something fast”...already an avid pilot and aviation enthusiast...currently serving as Squadron Commander...named to the Commandant’s List for excellence in military performance...also named to the Athletic Director’s List...hobbies include driving tractors, installing stereos, building computers, paddle boarding in artic water, dunking on Collin Schulz, golfing the Silver Course at Eisenhower GC, Star Wars, increasing gains in the weight room, and listening to German EDM with Jake Hall...replaced over 200 iPhone screens while in high school...would like to add that “my great-grandma beat me in arm wrestling in high school”...maternal grandfather and uncle served in the Army, while a cousin has been enlisted in the Air Force for over 12 years…served as Course Commander for the Leadership Reactionary Course (LRC) over the summer…also went to Texas, climbed mountains, went to Indiana with Mitch Lipe, fed cattle, and bailed hay...member of Cadet Squadron 03.
