Women's Basketball

Capt Rachel Smith
- Title:
- Assistant Coach (Military)
Capt Rachel E. Smith returns to the Air Force women's basketball staff for her second season as an assistant coach in the 2021-22 season.
With Smith’s efforts, the 2020-21 season was highlighted by Riley Snyder’s All-MW Honorable Mention nod and Kassady Huffman’s MW All-Defensive team selection. The Falcons finished the shortened 2020-21 campaign with an 8-18 overall record and a 4-14 mark in the Mountain West, finishing ninth in the league. The Falcons made it to the MWC quarterfinals for the second-straight season, defeating SDSU in the first round and falling to top-seeded New Mexico thereafter.
Prior to joining the Academy, Capt Smith served as the Air Terminal Operations Center Flight Commander, 305th Aerial Port Squadron, Joint Base (JB) McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. As the Air Terminal Operations Center Flight Commander, she led 49 military and civilian personnel in command and control of Aerial Port operations to pilot a workload of 325 personnel across five different work centers. Capt Smith facilitated Aerial Port resources to support the air transportation of cargo and passengers to over 2.5K Department of Defense agencies via military and commercial aircraft.
Most recently she was a graduate student at the Air Force Institute of Technology. There, she worked with the USAFRICOM/J4 Operational Contract Support Cell to create a framework for expanding the Africa First Policy. Her research analyzed the logistics competence of African countries and developed data driven methodology to scale the policy throughout the African continent.
Capt Smith is a 2014 Academy graduate and 4 year letter winner in both indoor and outdoor track and field. She was the Academy’s first conference champion in the women’s high jump and recorded Academy records during both the 2014 indoor and outdoor seasons. Her success continued after graduation as she won back to back Allied Air Command high jump championships with the All-Air Force Team in 2015 and 2017.
