USAFA, Colo. (Oct. 28) - The Falcons volleyball team fought a tough battle, but lost to UNLV 3-0 (8-15, 13-15, 14-16) Saturday in a Mountain West Conference match. The Falcons were close in every game, but they could not overcome a solid performance by the Rebels' hitters, who tallied 62 kills in the match.
Game one was close early, but with the score tied at seven, the Rebels used a seven-point run to put the game out of reach. They went on to win 15-8. The second game was also well fought. The teams see-sawed back and forth, until the Rebels took a 14-12 lead. The Falcons fought off three game points before falling 15-13.
The final game of the match was extremely competitive. The Rebels grabbed the momentum late in the game and led 14-10. Falcons' blocker Christine Nigro had consecutive solo blocks which ignited the team. The Falcons battled back to tie the score at 14 apiece, but two reception errors cost the Falcons a chance to win the game.
Nigro, who leads the team in blocks, finished the game with nine total blocks (two solo, seven assisted). Ana-Maria Ortega continued her outstanding play, finishing the game with 16 kills and five digs. Ortega has tallied 50 kills in the last three games. Delavane Diaz had 14 kills and eight digs, while Jamie Rempel finished with seven kills and 11 digs.
It was a total team effort for the Rebels, as four hitters finished the game with 15 kills each. Maria Julia Goes had an outstanding night at the setter position, tallying 54 assists.
Next up for the Falcons (6-16, 0-10 MWC) is No. 3 Colorado State on Nov. 3, followed by Wyoming on Nov. 4. It will be the Falcons final road game of the season.
