Women's Tennis Takes Second In Boulder

"I was extremely pleased with the way all our doubles teams competed and played," said Falcon's head coach Kim Gidley. "Compared to where we were last year at this time, we did a much better job of expecting to win and not being intimidated by the schools our opponents were from. The other thing I am excited about is that our doubles teams are already able to do some things that we had not been able to last year because our "knowledge of how to play doubles" and the execution is at a higher level. This is where are teams were competing at, in February of last year. It's always a nice feeling to not feel as if you are always starting over at the beginning of each season. It is great to carry over that experience and confidence."
Saturday saw the schools only competing in singles at a different club from the day prior in Denver. The format changed from match to match due to losing courts in the middle of the day. Some matches played two sets and a super tie-breaker for the third, a pro set, or a regular set, and to not playing after you lost twice. *A Super Tie-Breaker is played like a regular tie-breaker, except to 10 points. "The most impressive thing about our team was their level of fight," said Gidley. "When I look at our scores, I am impressed. We had Laura Nigro lose a close first set against CU's winner of the flight two draw and came back to win the second set, only to lose the super tier- breaker 10-8. Also, Kelli O'Bryant in flight three, came back from a close first set to also lose in the super tie-breaker 10-6. In the same flight, Ashley Gee came back from a 6-1,1-0 deficit - to win the super tie-breaker 10-6. Ashley also defeated last year's finalist in flight two - from CU - in the semis."
Sunday saw much of the same confusion. "We once again played at a different club, as well as scoring formats from each match," said Gidley. "Freshman, June Lee, and sophomore, Heather Shelby, both lost in the semis in flight four singles. Senior, Kristel Chuntraruk, lost in the semis of the flight one singles. The only finalist for the Lady Falcons was junior, Ashley Gee, in flight three singles. Ashley had two hard fought matches and then went right back on the court. Without a different scoring format for the finals and rest between the semis, Ashley was right in there. Ashley is a player who plays within her limits and fights for everything. Overall, it was a great start for the lady Falcons."
