USAF Academy, Colo. - Senior Britt Miller scored two goals Sunday as the Air Force men's soccer team won its sixth consecutive game, defeating UNLV 5-0. The Falcons remain in sole possession of first place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings.
Air Force, 11-2 overall and 4-0 in MPSF play, scored four goals in the first half and played another solid defensive game in handing the Rebels their second consecutive loss. The Falcons took advantage of UNLV having three starters on the bench, including goalie Scott Winstead, after receiving red cards in its game against Denver on Friday.
Sophomore Paul Gagliardi opened the scoring just eight minutes into the game by taking a cross by freshman Marcus Sagastume and heading it perfectly past UNLV keeper Justin Dennis. Sophomore Dan Walsh made the score 2-0 at the 20:25 mark with his sixth goal of the season after taking a through pass from Sagastume and chipping it over Dennis.
Walsh assisted on the Falcons' next goal as he gathered a loose ball on the left side and sent a pass behind a UNLV defender to junior Tom Clark, whose shot smacked off the left post and into the net behind Dennis. That goal came at 21:35 of the half.
Senior Britt Miller closed out the scoring in the first stanza with his first goal of the season in the 42nd minute when he gathered in a punt by Falcon goalie Mike Brophy and placed a shot under Dennis' arms. It was the first career assist for Brophy. Miller also scored the only goal in the second half with just 51 seconds left in the game.
Brophy made four saves for Air Force and improves his league-high shutout total to 6.5. Dennis made only two saves on seven shots on goal for UNLV, which falls to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the MPSF.
The Falcons play their final home game of the season next Sunday, Oct. 28 against MPSF foe Denver at 1 p.m.
