Women's soccer falls to UNLV in MWC Championships

Third-seeded UNLV (12-6-1) defeated seventh-seeded Air Force (8-11-1), Thursday, Nov. 8, 2-1 in overtime, in the semifinals of the 2001 Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championship on Peter Johann Memorial Field on the campus of UNLV. UNLV advanced to the championship game against top-seeded BYU. Air Force's season ended with the loss.
All of the scoring came late in the match, starting with a penalty kick converted by junior midfielder Christyn Enea in the 62nd minute to put the Rebels ahead, 1-0. Senior midfielder Beth Boyer of Air Force evened the score at one in the 73rd minute when she pushed the ball past UNLV goalkeeper Alice Gleason.
UNLV senior striker Anita Pedford scored the game-winning goal in the 10th minute of the first over-time period, sending the Rebels to their first conference championship match in programs history. The victory was the 12th of the season for UNLV, marking the most wins in a season for the four-year program. The winner of Saturday's match will receive an automatic bid into the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
