Air Force Water Polo Splits At Triton Tournament

Air Force finished 2-2 this weekend and placed third at the Triton Tournament hosted by UC San Diego. The Falcons defeated BYU-Hawaii, 14-4, and La Verne, 14-6 in their first day of competition. The Falcons lost both games Sunday afternoon, suffering a bitter 14-2 loss to tournament hosts UCSD and falling 13-6 to Loyola Marymount. The Falcons entered this weekend's Triton Tournament after a 3-1finish in last year's tournament, losing their only match of the weekend to UC San Diego, 9-6. Air Force defeated Pamonona-Pitzer, 15-5, La Verne, 10-8, and Loyola Marymount, 9-8.
Vs. BYU-Hawaii: C3C's (So.) Scott Butler and John Whitehill, and C2C (Jr.) Chris Smith led the way in scoring for the Falcons with two goals each. Air Force was able to soar past BYU-Hawaii in its first game of the tournament. The Falcons dominated the first two periods, 3-0 and 6-0, losing only the third quarter, 2-1. Air Force rebounded in the fourth with four goals to BYU's two, winning the match 14-4. 10 Falcons scored during the game including goals from C1C's (Sr.) Ben Couchman and David Breitenbach, C3C's Eric Baber, Kirk Reimer and Micah Peterson, and C2C's Charles Horn and Lowell Wallace.
Vs. La Verne: Air Force won the first three quarters, 3-1, 3-0, 6-1, and lost the fourth period 4-2. The Falcons won 14-6. Butler led the team in scoring again with five goals against La Verne, followed by Reimer with three and Smith with two. C1C Brian Hasbrouck, Couchman, Horn, and Peterson each scored.
Vs. UC San Diego: UCSD downed the Falcons 14-2 in the second day of competition for Air Force's first loss of the season. Smith scored the only two goals for the Falcons during the second and third periods.
Vs. Loyola Marymount: Loyola Marymount defeated Air Force 13-6 in the Falcons final match of the tournament. Breitenbach led Air Force with two goals, followed by C4C (Fr.) Josh Shadrick, Horn, Butler, and Smith who each had a goal. Air Force finished third behind UCSD who placed first, followed by Loyola Marymount. Santa Clara placed fourth followed by Redlands, BYU-Hawaii, Claremont, La Verne, Whittier, and Pamona-Pitzer.
Upcoming: The Air Force water polo team will be in action again September 15-16 at the Southern California Tournament in Los Angeles hosted by USC.
