Oregon State Defeats AFA, 3-1, In Women's Soccer

Katie Henderson scored two goals and Jo Fletcher made several diving saves to lead Oregon State to a 3-1 victory over Air Force in the final game of the Falcon Invitational women's soccer tournament at the Academy's Cadet Soccer Stadium.
Henderson, the junior midfielder from Littleton, Colo., had three goals and two assists in the two-game tournament and was named the offensive most valuable player. Air Force's Billie Rothwell, a junior sweeper from Round Rock, Texas, was named the tournament's defensive MVP.
Oregon State (2-0 overall) won both games in the tournament, including a 4-1 win over Dayton in the first round. Dayton placed second with a 1-1 record and a plus-1 goals differential. Cal-Irvine was also 1-1, but the Anteaters placed third with a minus-3 goals differential. AFA was fourth with a 0-2 record.
In the tournament's final game, Henderson opened the scoring at 40:50 on a header off of Lindsey Beem's corner kick. Early in the second half, the Falcons tied the game at 1-1 on a penalty kick. AFA midfielder Beth Boyer fired a shot to the upper left corner in the 46th minute. The game remained tied as both teams had several opportunities in the next 20 minutes. OSU's Whitney Horn gave the Beavers the lead as she netted a header off of Beem's corner kick in the 70th minute. Henderson iced the game at 83:14 when she blasted a shot from 15 yards out that deflected off of AFA keeper J.J. Wolf's outstretched hands. AFA had several golden opportunities in the game that were denied by Fletcher. She stopped Elaine Tatarek, Jennifer Rowland and Mary Cholko with diving saves. OSU had 14 total shots, eight on goal. AFA had 13 total shots with eight on goal.
In Sunday's first game, Dayton (1-1 overall) blanked UC Irvine, 4-0. Dayton's Megan McKnight and Tesia Kozlowski scored in the first half. Flyer midfielder Shannon Kuhl scored in the 85th and 87th minutes to make up the final margin. Datyon out-shot the Anteaters (1-1), 22-5 overall and 11-2 on net.
Air Force, 0-2 overall this season, is on the road for the next four games. The Falcons travel to Pocatello, Idaho, next weekend for the Idaho State Tournament. AFA plays Weber State, Friday, Sept. 7, and Idaho State, Sunday, Sept. 9.
