Christine Miller and Beth Boyer each scored two goals to lead Air Force to a 6-1 victory over Portland State in a non-conference women's soccer match Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Academy's Cadet Soccer Stadium.
The Falcons, 3-2-1 overall this season, extended their unbeaten streak to four games. Portland State fell to 0-6-1 overall this season.
Air Force out-shot the visitors 26-14 overall and 18-5 on goal. In two home games over the weekend, the Falcons out-shot the opponent 65-17 overall and 38-7 on goal.
Freshman Cookie Day got the Falcons on the board in the game's first minute. The midfielder from Dallas, Texas, scored on a rebound of Miller's shot. Boyer netted her first goal of the game, and sixth of the season, at 10:42. Boyer took a pass from Wendy Emminger, dribbled down the right wing near the end line, and chipped a shot high over the keeper's head. Boyer gave the Falcons 3-0 lead at 34:47 on a penalty kick. PSU's Jamie MacLaughlan was called for a foul in the penalty box and Boyer tallied her third penalty kick goal of the season. AFA built a 4-0 lead early in the second half. Marci Freund scored her second goal of the season as she rebounded Jennifer Rowland's shot. The Vikings got on the board at 49:28 as Amy Orr fired a shot from 20 yards out that hit the crossbar. Jamie Giger collected the loose ball and scored her first goal of the season. Miller scored two goals nine minutes apart midway through the second half. Her first goal of the game, and second of the season, was a header from the left post off of Rowland's cross from the right wing. Her second goal was an unassisted blast from 18 yards out to the top right corner.
AFA goalkeeper Jennifer Monson stopped four of the five shots she faced. PSU keeper Gretchen Pietras made 12 saves in the game.
"We are getting a lot of opportunities and are finally starting to put them away," head coach Marty Buckley said. "I am very happy with the way we are playing right now. We just need to keep it going. This is a perfect way to get ready for Army and Navy next weekend. We have never beaten them in the same season and that is the next step we need to take."
The Falcons travel to the annual Toys for Tots/Military Academies Classic, Sept. 28-30, in St. Louis, Mo. Air Force faces Navy, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m., and Army, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.
