SAN DIEGO - (Jan. 26) The Air Force women's basketball team narrowly missed winning its first conference game of the season, falling to San Diego State 58-50. Despite the outcome, the Falcons kept the game close and exciting throughout, but a let down late in the game proved costly. The Falcons fall to 0-5 in the Mountain West and 4-14 overall. The Aztecs are 9-9 overall and 1-4 in conference.
After taking a seven-point lead, the Falcons surrendered a 15-2 run to the Aztecs with less than five minutes to go in the half. Despite leading most of the first half, Air Force headed to the locker room trailing 32-25.
The teams played evenly throughout much of the second half, until the Falcons made a move at the 8:13 mark. Trailing 45-38, Gwendolyn Grove nailed back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to one point. San Diego State regained the momentum, scoring the next eight points to take a commanding nine-point lead. The Falcons would never get closer to the lead than eight.
Grove knocked down three treys and finished the game with a team- and career-high 12 points. Amoy Jackson added 10 points and led the team on the boards with seven rebounds. Latoya Howell had six assists and two steals. The Falcons finished the game shooting .347 (17-of-49) from the field and .278 (5-of-18) from beyond the arc.
Three San Diego State players finished in double figures in scoring, including Claire Swinbank, who led all scorers with 19 points. Jamey Cox add 15 points and Valencia Howard had 11. Atim Otii had eight rebounds to lead the Aztecs on the boards.
Air Force (4-14, 0-5 MWC) will look for its first conference win of the season when it hosts Wyoming on Jan. 30, followed by Colorado State on Feb. 2.
