The Air Force men's soccer team overcame a slow start and its defense made two first half goals stand up as the Falcons defeated Drury University, 2-1, Friday at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
Drury dominated the first 25 minutes of the game, taking nine shots, compared to two for the Falcons. Four of the shots were on goal and the Panthers opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Brian Crossan took a through pass from Kyle Sebus and chipped it in over Falcon goalie Mike Taylor.
Air Force picked up the pace of the game and tied the score at 1-all when freshman Skyler Clarkston blasted a shot from 20 yards out past Drury netminder Mike Gallagher. Senior David Auston assisted on Clarkston's third tally of the season.
Senior Paul Gagliardi put the Falcons up for good with just 4:27 remaining in the first half as he beat Gallagher from just to the right of the penalty kick mark. Senior Thomas Clark and freshman Clay McGillivray each picked up an assist, with McGillivray notching his first career point as a Falcon.
Junior Jeremiah Kirschman helped the Falcons in the first half as he saved a Drury shot at the goal line that snuck past Taylor in the 20th minute. The Falcon defense, led by Kirschman and junior Casey Chronister, allowed just four shots on goal in each half as the Falcons improve to 6-5-1. Drury fell to 2-11.
Taylor made eight saves, including one from point blank range with just over nine minutes to go, while Gallagher also made eight saves.
Air Force opens play against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponents next Friday, Oct. 11 when it hosts Sacramento State at 3 p.m. at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
