The Air Force women's basketball team suffered a disappointing loss at home to non-conference opponent Weber State, falling 60-46. The Falcons could not get their shots to fall, as the team scored its fewest points of the season in the loss.
Air Force struggled from the floor, shooting just 20 percent (6-for-30) in the first half. Despite their shooting woes, the Falcons trailed by just eight points, 31-23, at the break. The shooting picked up a bit in the second half, but the team finished the game shooting 26 percent (15-for-58) overall.
The Falcon defense forced 18 turnovers, keeping the team's hopes alive. Air Force held the Wildcats to just four points in the game's final six minutes. But the Falcons were unable to take advantage of numerous steals, forced turnovers and defensive rebounds, as they scored just three points in that same stretch.
Latoya Howell led the Falcons in scoring with 21 points. She was the only Falcon in double figures in points. It was her fourth 20-plus scoring output of the year. She also led the team with eight rebounds and four assists.
Weber State's 6-foot-4 center Crystal Howe was a dominant force down low for the Wildcats. She grabbed 14 rebounds and had 16 points in the paint for the double double. Julie Gjertsen added 12 points, while Sheila Robertson chipped in 11.
The loss drops the Falcons' record to 5-4 overall. They have just one day of practice before heading on the road New Year's Day. They will face Bucknell on Thursday, Jan. 2, at 5:30 p.m. MST. They will then play military rival Army on Saturday, Jan. 4. Tip off for that game is noon MST. They need just one win to break the Academy's Division I single season win record, which they tied at five with a win against Sacramento State.
