SALT LAKE CITY - (Feb. 16) Air Force remained winless in 10 tries against the Utah Utes, falling 71-53 in conference action at the Huntsman Center on Saturday. The Falcons, who are still looking for their first conference victory, fall to 4-19 overall and 0-10 in the Mountain West.
The Falcons led much of the first half before Lindsay Herbert hit a three-pointer at the 6:28 mark to give Utah a 16-15 lead. It was the start of a 20-4 run to close out the half, and the Falcons found themselves staring at a 14-point halftime deficit. The Utes opened the second half with 11 consecutive points, including three three-pointers, and the Falcons would never recover.
For the second straight game, Shawna Neff was the Falcons leading scorer. Neff was 5-of-6 from beyond the arc and finished the game with a career-high 22 points. Amoy Jackson added eight points and five rebounds, while Samantha Clifton had five rebounds. Latoya Howell tied a career high with seven assists.
Three Utah players finished the game in double figures in scoring, including Herbert, who had a game-high 18 points. Lauren Beckman notched 10 points and Erin Gibbons added 12 points. Beckman led the team on the boards with nine rebounds. She also was a force on defense, notching five blocks and three steals.
The Falcons shot 30.8 percent (16-of-52) from the field and 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from three-point range. The team was 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the free throw line, their lowest percentage this season. Air was out-rebounded 35-27 in the game.
Air Force (4-19, 0-10 MWC) will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 21, when they host San Diego State. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
