Utah State's Amber Tracy broke a 2-2 tie with a 40-yard shot in the 67th minute as the Aggies beat Air Force, 3-2, in a non-conference women's soccer match Friday, Sept. 20, at the Academy's Cadet Soccer Stadium.
Offense was the word of the day as the team's combined for 54 total shots and 27 shots on goal. Utah State fired five shots on goal in the first 15 minutes of the game. USU struck first as Brigid Turner (six goals this season) scored from Lacey Poulton in the 12th minute. Air Force goalkeeper J.J. Wolf came out near the top of the penalty box to play a loose ball, but Poulton beat Wolf to the ball and found Turner all alone in front of the net. Each team had eight shots on goal in the first half, but USU held a 1-0 lead.
The Aggies, 4-1-2 overall this season, took a 2-0 lead in the 55th minute on Heather Arnell's goal from Ally Clegg. Clegg sent a lob pass to Arnell near the goal line and Arnell's header hit the bottom of the cross bar and went in for her fourth goal of the season.
Air Force, 3-4, came back as junior Leigh-Anne Withers scored two goals in six minutes to tie the game at 2-2. Her first goal of the game, and the season, was unassisted in the 57th minute from the right wing. Her second goal came at 63:20 and was also unassisted as she stole a pass and scored from 18 yards out on the right wing.
Tracy broke the tie with her second goal of the season and first game-winner. In the 67th minute, Wolf came out of the penalty box at the top and attempted to kick a ball out of danger. Her clearing attempt was intercepted by Tracy, who collected herself and took a shot from 40 yards. The ball just crawled over the goal line, next to the near post, as an Air Force defender was giving chase.
Mills made 12 saves for the Aggies while Wolf had 10 saves for the Falcons.
Air Force returns to the home field on Sunday, Sept. 22, against Central Florida at 12 p.m. Utah State travels north to face the University of Wyoming on Sunday.
