Tyler McClung advances to quarterfinals at Balloon Fiesta Tournament

Air Force junior Tyler McClung has advanced to the quarterfinals in singles and doubles at the 2003 Balloon Fiesta Tennis Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. McClung, the fourth seed in the singles main draw, defeated Jamie Maxwell of Northern Arizona, 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 16. He will play Jasmin Hodzic of New Mexico on Saturday.
McClung and doubles partner Chris Dong, the tournament top-seeded doubles team, handled Derek Bervar and Brent Davis of UC Riverside, 8-5, in the round of 16 and will play fifth-seeded Ivan Angulo and Gerald Bremond of the College of Santa Fe.
Air Force's other two doubles teams lost on Friday. Sophomore Trevor Johnson and freshman Sky Jensen defeated UC Riverside's Mark Contreras and Caesar Regaliza, 8-6, before falling to David Detudamo and Ananda Sawmynaden of New Mexico Military Institute, 8-5. Freshman Robbie Alexander and Justin Lau lost in the first round, 8-1, to Eric Conklin and Gers Henry of UNM.
In singles action, Dong, Johnson and senior Patrick Jackson all lost in the first round of the main draw and will compete in the consolation bracket beginning on Saturday. Lau, meanwhile won two matches in the "B" flight bracket, including a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Brian Grooms of Northern Arizona and a walkover against JJ Brooker of New Mexico State, to advance to the semifinals. Jensen is in the quarterfinals of the "B" flight after a 6-3, 6-0 victory over James Heck of Northern Arizona.
