The Rhodes Scholarships are the oldest international fellowships, bringing the best students from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. They began in 1902, with the first American Scholars elected in 1904.
Rhodes Scholars from America are chosen through a process by which regional selection committees choose 32 scholars each year from among the students nominated by selection committees in each of the fifty states.
Rhodes Scholars are selected for two years of study at the University of Oxford. All educational costs, such as tuition and labratory fees, are paid on the Rhodes Scholar recipient's behalf by the Rhodes Trustees. Each Scholar also recieves an allowance to meet expenses during term and vacation time, as well as the cost of travel to and from Oxford.
Diaz is the 33rd cadet from the Air Force Academy to be named a Rhodes Scholar.
