Grant Lundberg scored two goals and Scott Bertram added two assists Friday as the Gonzaga men's soccer team defeated the Air Force Falcons, 5-3, in the season opener for both teams. The game was in the first round of the 2003 Parents Weekend Invitational at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Marquette edged Denver, 2-1, in the other first round matchup.
The Falcons opened the scoring in the 26th minute when sophomore Colin Eames weaved through the Bulldog defense and let loose a shot from 18 yards that eluded Gonzaga goalie Vito Higgins.
The Bulldogs evened the score in the 33rd minute when Mike Herzog sent in a shot from 25 yards out that bounced once and went right through the hands of Air Force goalie Mike Maynard, a sophomore making his first career start. Gonzaga took the lead when Lundberg sent a rocket past Maynard into the upper right corner of the net off a pass from Arni Pjeturrson.
The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead early in the second half as Pjetturson found himself alone in front of an open net after Maynard made a diving save off a shot by Bertram. It was Pjetturson's only shot on goal for the game.
Air Force junior Daniel Bolin closed the gap to 3-2 by nailing a penalty kick past Higgins after Eames was taken down in the box after moving past two Gonzaga defenders. Falcon freshman Damon Wong then tied the score at 3-all in the 66th minute with his first career goal. Off a corner kick taken by Eames, AFA senior Casey Chronister headed the ball near the goal and Wong snuck the ball past Higgins with a group of players around him.
Air Force could not hold on to the momentum, however, as Scott Yuska gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 79:50 after slipping a crossing pass from Bertram past Maynard. Lundberg then put the game away just 30 seconds later when he received a crossing pass from Mitch White that went past the outstretched arms of Maynard and found Lundberg on the endline to the left of the net. With Maynard out of position, Lundberg sliced the ball into the open net.
Higgins made eight saves for Gonzaga, while Maynard had four for the Falcons. Junior Marcus Sagastume led Air Force with seven total shots and five on goal, while sophomore Daniel Wasson had five total shots and three on goal.
In the first game, Blair Kohlmeyer came off the bench to score both goals in Marquette's come-from-behind victory over Denver.
The tournament concludes on Sunday as Denver takes on Gonzaga at 12 p.m., followed by Air Force against Marquette at 2:30 p.m.
