Air Force Sweeps Army in Season Opener

The Air Force volleyball team tallied 52 kills en route to a 3-0 (30-21, 30-25, 30-19) sweep over service academy rival Army in the team's season opener. The Falcons finished the match with a .324 hitting percentage in the victory at the Army Invitational tournament.
"I am real proud of the way the team played," said head coach Penny Lucas-White. "To begin the season with a victory over Army will be a real boost of confidence for our players."
The Falcons outside hitters Lamecca Jefferson and Delavane Diaz each had 16 kills in the win. Diaz finished with a .400 hitting percentage, while Jefferson hit .393 percent. Diaz had 10 digs for the double-double. Kristin Huitt tallied 48 assists while Jenalee Burke, making her first appearance since the 2001 season, tallied 17 digs to lead all players.
Freshman Lindsay Bengard made her first career start at middle blocker. She notched six kills on seven attacks (.714 percent). Kristin Hamlett added eight kills and Molly White had six kills. The team combined for four total blocks and 10 service aces.
Army was led by Eileen Cassidy who had 13 kills. Becky Brown added 11 kills for the Black Knights.
The Falcons will take on Marist on Saturday (August 30th) at 2 p.m. EST. Marist, who finished 2002 10-25 overall, lost to Portland State 3-0 in its tournament opener. The Falcons will then take on Portland State at 6 p.m. The Vikings have not lost a game in two matches, defeating both Marist and Providence.
