The Air Force men's soccer team could not overcome an early 3-0 deficit Sunday and fell to Furman, 4-3, in the Clemson Invitational. Junior Daniel Bolin led the Falcons with a goal and an assist.
Josh Villalobos scored one goal and had two assists and teammate Clint Dempsey added a goal and an assist as Furman improved its record to 2-5-2. Air Force dropped to 5-4-1 this season.
The Paladins took a 3-0 lead midway in the first half with goals from Scott Hoch, Dempsey, and Eric Vogl. Air Force junior Marcus Sagastume scored at the 31:47 mark to make the halftime score 3-1. Senior Dan Walsh assisted on the play.
The Paladins' Villalobos converted on a penalty kick to give Furman a 4-1 advantage less than six minutes into the second half. Air Force stormed back with two goals as Colin Eames took a pass from Bolin and scored at the 55:31 mark, then Bolin scored an unassisted goal five minutes later to make the score 4-3.
Furman held AFA's leading scorer, Daniel Wasson, in check the entire game. Wasson, who had two goals in the team's 3-3 tie with Clemson on Friday, mustered just one shot on Sunday. Sophomore Brian Dougal made three saves for Air Force, and Alex Maslow made the same number for Furman. Wasson and Sagastume were named to the all-tournament team.
The Falcons have nine days off before returning to the field on Tuesday, October 7 against Division II foe CU-Colorado Springs. The game begins at 7 p.m. at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
