USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Senior co-captain Jeff Andersen (Marietta, Ga.) finished second on the pommel horse, as the Air Force men's gymnastics team hosted the individual event finals of the Rocky Mountain Open. One of two Falcons competing on the second day of competition, Andersen tallied an 8.950 on the event to finish as the runner-up.
The top ten competitors, plus any ties, from the team competition last night (Jan. 16) advanced to the event finals, as long as no institution was represented by more than three athletes in each event.
Brett McClure of the U.S. Olympic Training Center, won the floor exercise and the parallel bars, with scores of 9.300 and 9.600, respectively. Two of McClure's teammates also claimed an event's highest score as Jason Gatson won the still rings (9.600) and Steve McCain finished first on the high bar (9.600). Nebraska's John Rasile won the vault with a 9.300, while Oklahoma's Daniel Furney took the pommel horse with a 9.250.
Andersen also tied for fourth on the still rings, with a score 9.100, and took 10th on the parallel bars with a score of 8.550. Also competing for the Falcons in the event finals was sophomore Greg Stine (Houston, Texas). Stine finished 10th on the still rings (8.550) and 11th on the parallel bars with a 8.450.
The Falcons return to action next weekend when they travel to Norman, Okla., to take on defending national champion Oklahoma. It will be the second time in as many weeks that the two teams face off, as Oklahoma won the collegiate division title of the Rocky Mountain Open.
