Patrick Hoopes Repeats as U.S. Champion, Named to World Team

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Air Force assistant gymnastics coach 2Lt Patrick Hoopes successfully defended his national title on the pommel horse last night (Aug. 8), as he wrapped up competition at the 2026 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Phoenix.

Hoopes opened the national meet with a stellar 15.641 performance (6.100 difficulty, 8.600 execution, 0.941 bonus) on Thursday, Aug. 6 – the only gymnast to surpass 15 points on that apparatus during Night 1. He broke the 15-point barrier again on Night 2 (Saturday, Aug. 8), as the tallied a 15.175 (5.900 difficulty, 8.550 execution, 0.725 bonus) for a two-day total of 30.816 – a tally that bettered the 38-man pommel horse field by more than a half-point and secured the second-straight national title for Hooper.

Following the competition, Hoopes was named to Team USA for the 2026 World Gymnastics Championships, which will take place Oct. 17-26 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Hoopes, who earned a bronze medal at the 2025 world meet, will be joined on this year's squad by Danila Leykin, Kameron Nelseon, Frederick Richard, and Shane Wiskus, while Yul Moldauer will serve as the traveling alternate and Cooper Kim will be the non-traveling alternate.
