San Jose State Upends Air Force, 3-2

San Jose State men's soccer team scored three goals in a 20 --minute span, including the game-winner by Jose Juarez in the 81st minute Friday to lead the Spartans to a 3-2 win over Air Force. The win improved the Spartans to 3-9-1 overall and 2-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while the Falcons fell to 6-6-1 overall and 2-4 in the MPSF.Juarez came off the bench in the 73rd minute for Johnny Gonzalez. Juarez then scored at the 80:25 mark on a breakaway up the right side of the field. He took a pass from Marvin Sorto and shot it past Falcon keeper Mike Maynard.All five goals were scored in the second half. The two teams battled to a 0-0 in the first half. Shots were even at 7-7, and each goalkeeper made four saves for the first half shut out.The second half was different story as each team took eight shots. Falcon junior Scott Muir started the scoring with a header off of a right corner kick from Colin Eames. The Spartans responded at 60:51 as Patrick Scheufler scored to tie the match at 1-1. He scored as the ball bounced around in front of the goal. Tim McKinney started the play by bringing the ball up the field and passing to Gonzales on the left side of the box who passed it into Scheufler in the box.McKinney then untied the match with a goal in the 78th minute. He knocked the ball directly into the net after receiving a pass from Frank Mata who had received a pass from Sorto. Juarez then scored what would become the game-winning goal at 80:25.Air Force responded in the 83rd minute with a breakaway goal scored by Marcus Sagastume, who put in his fifth goal of the season. He and David Schill broke away from the pack, and Schill passed the ball to Sagastume on the left side. Sagastume then shot it past Spartan keeper Daniel Benton. Air Force had a couple of chances in the last three minutes of the match but could not find the back of the net.
The Falcons, who have lost four consecutive games and ten straight conference road matches, play at Sacramento State on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
