Second-half goals by freshman Ian Hauck and sophomore Josh Sanders propelled the Air Force men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory Sunday over San Jose State at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the victory, Air Force improves to 6-2-1 overall and 2-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action, while the Spartans fall to 1-7-1 overall and 0-2 in the MPSF.
After a scoreless first half, Hauck put the Falcons on the board in the 56th minute with his first career goal. Following a free kick by Colin Eames and a rebound shot by Scott Muir that was saved but not corralled by SJSU goalie, Dan Benton, Hauck found the loose ball on the doorstep of the goal and knocked it over Benton. Muir recorded his first assist of the season.
Air Force added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute as Sanders took a centering pass from Eames and put a shot past Benton from five yards out. It is Sanders' fourth goal of the season and he is now second on the team's scoring list with 10 points (4g, 2a), one behind senior Marcus Sagastume.
Junior goalie Mike Maynard made seven saves for the Falcons in posting the first shutout of his career. Maynard, who improves his record to 3-0 this season, made some outstanding saves late in the game as the Spartans were pushing their offense forward.
The game was physical throughout, as the two teams combined for 42 fouls and five yellow cards. Benton made eight saves for San Jose State as Air Force oushot the Spartans, 22-20 overall and 10-7 in shots on goal. SJSU did hold an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Air Force's 2-0 record against MPSF teams is the best conference start for the Falcons since 2001, when they won their first four league games.
Air Force continues MPSF play next weekend with a pair of road games. The Falcons will play San Diego State on Friday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m., then travel to UNLV for a game on Sunday, Oct. 10 at noon.
