USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force women's soccer opened Mountain West Conference play with a tough 1-0 loss to Wyoming on a cool and clear Friday night at the Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons fall to 3-8-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
Wyoming improved to 6-3-4 overall and 1-0-0 in MWC play. The game winning goal came off a corner kick at the 22:52 mark by Littleton native Christine Nagel. Nagel sent the shot curling to the top of the goal that slid through the outstretched hands of Air Force goalkeeper Jennifer Drew.
The game was a cleanly played defensive battle. The two teams combined for just 13 fouls, nine for Wyoming and four for AFA. The Cowgirl defense shutdown the Falcon offense for most of the game, not allowing Air Force to get a shot on goal until the 57:11 mark.
Despite being shutdown for most of the night, the Falcon offense came to life late in the game, but could not capitalize on its opportunities. With 6:30 remaining in regulation, freshman Taryn Nicolaides got a shot off from a deflected free kick by freshman Betsy Eames, that swung just inches wide by the left goalpost. The Falcons had two corner kick opportunities under four minutes left in the game, but could not score.
Highlands Ranch native Ashley Sheppard picked up the shutout win in goal for Wyoming tallying three saves in the process. Drew recorded four saves for Air Force.
Sarah Skinner took four of the Cowgirls' 12 shots, including two of the five shots on goal. Senior Jennifer Rowland had two of AFA's eight shots, including one of the three on goal.
The Falcons return to action Sunday, Oct. 10, traveling down I-25 to Albuquerque to take New Mexico in a 1 p.m. kickoff. Livestats will be available for the match by clicking on the gametracker link on the front page of AirForceSports.com or goLobos.com.
