FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The eighth-seed Air Force volleyball team concluded the 2004 season with a 3-0 loss to top-ranked Utah on Thursday, Nov. 18, in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament. The Falcons dropped consecutive sets of 30-24, 30-21 and 30-17 to the conference co-champions.
The two squads traded closely contested points in the opening segment, with Air Force backed by Kristin Hamlett (Escondido, Calif.) and Lamecca Jefferson (Beeville, Texas) kills. Five straight points from the Utes put the Falcons down, but they slowly pulled close. The Falcons pulled within two at the 10-8 mark and again at the 12-10 mark following a kill and block by Hamlett. Utah once again stretched out the lead, but Air Force came back and again pulled within two behind kills from Jefferson and Rebecca Gallegos (Las Vegas, N.M.). Although the Utes crept closer to the 30-point final, Air Force wasn't going to go quietly. Brittany Oligney (Katy, Texas) and Brooke Akers (Desert Hot Springs, Calif.) teamed up for a block that held Utah at 29, before they finally took the set 30-24.
An Air Force block opened the second set and two errors by Utah contributed to a 3-1 Falcon lead. Jefferson recorded the first kill of the set and although the Utes tied it at six, seven and nine, Air Force was the first team to reach 10 points off of a Jefferson kill. Utah took its first lead of the game at 11-10 and embarked on a 6-0 run to climb out to a 22-15 lead. Air Force attempted a comeback, but fell 30-21 in the second round.
The two teams played close during the opening segment of the third set, tying the game at eight with a service ace by Jenalee Burke (Bakersfield, Calif.). Utah took another lead, but the Falcons pulled within one at 11-10 following a long rally that saw Molly White (Lafayette, La.) diving to the sideline to save a pass. Utah went on a long 10-2 run that was only broken up by an assisted block from White and Akers, as well as a solo block by White. Utah continued scoring and took the 30-17 win.
Jefferson led all Falcons with nine kills, while Hamlett was second with six. Kimberly Kallabis (Camino, Calif.) recorded 18 assists, while Burke led the team with 13 digs. Hamlett tallied three solo blocks to lead all participants, while Akers had a team-best two assisted stops.
Air Force concluded the season with a 4-21 overall record.
