USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The men's gymnastics team will be taking a break from team competition this weekend, as senior co-captain Jeff Andersen (Marietta, Ga.) travels to Las Vegas, Nev., for the annual Winter Cup Challenge, sponsored by USA-Gymnastics on Friday-Saturday (Feb. 6-7) at the Sports Center Arena. Nearly 100 of the nation's top gymnasts will compete at the Winter Cup Challenge - each vying for six spots on the U.S. National Team.
Competing in the all-around, Andersen is the Academy's first representative at the Winter Cup Challenge since Air Force All-American Joel Miller qualified to compete on the still rings in 1992. Andersen, a three-time letterwinner, finished 13th in the all-around at the NCAA Championships and was named a USAG All-American on the still rings, vault, parallel bars and all-around.
The Winter Cup Challenge will be divided up into two days. Friday will consist of the all-around competition and individual event preliminaries, while Saturday will have the event finals (the top eight gymnasts from Friday's prelims will qualify for the event finals).
Andersen will be competing in the second session, which begins on Friday at 8 p.m. (PST). He is in a group with several gymnasts he has faced this season, including Steve McCain (U.S. Olympic Training Center), Dan Gill (Stanford), Tony Pilyavsky (U.S. Olympic Training Center) and Mace Patterson (Nebraska). Also competing are David Durante, Cole Storer and David Sender. McCain, Gill and Durante are current members of the National Team, while Storer and Sender are members of the U.S. Junior National Team. Andersen's group will begin on the high bar.
