CLAREMONT, Calif. - When the Air Force track and field team traveled to California for the 46th-annual MT. SAC Relays, several members of the team competed at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Claremont, Calif., on Friday, April 16.
Freshman Caitie Holliday (Kalispell, Mont.) led the Falcon contingent, as she won the javelin with a NCAA Qualifying Mark of 147'3" - the third best mark in Academy history. Classmate Margaret Frash (Newburyport, Mass.) was the runner-up in the 3000-meter steeplechase, coming in at a personal-best time of 11:09.50 - also the third best time in school history.
Freshman Ashley Snyder (Pickerington, Ohio) claimed third in the 5000-meter run, crossing the finish line in a time of 17:53.00. Sophomore Lindsay Grose (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) finished ninth, with a time of 18:38.14.
Junior Cindy Dawson (Yreka, Calif.) recorded a top-10 finish in the 800-meter run with a ninth-place time of 2:12.53, while senior Kelly McPherson (RAF Mildenhall, England) finished 20th, with a time of 2:16.20. Junior Jami Hodge (Sachse, Texas) finished 11th out of 49 competitors in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.52.
Sophomore Vivien Aspden (Yucaipa, Calif.) and senior Anne Chumlea (Enon, Ohio) competed in the combined 10000-meter run. Aspden recorded an eighth-place finish overall (38:11.70), but was the second-fastest female on the course. Chumlea finished 12th - her time of 39:18.43 being the fifth-best time by a female.
On the men's side, senior Luke Marker (Manson, Wash.) led the way with a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the tape in 14.36.
A pair of California natives had good showings in some of the larger fields of competition at the invitational. Junior Chris Gausepohl (Fallbrook) recorded a time of 1:52.52 in the 800-meter run to finish eighth out of 65 competitors. Sophomore Troy Jensen (Santa Ana) clocked a time of 22.14 in the 200-meter dash to finish 25th out of the nearly 60 competitors in his event.
In the 1500-meter run, three Falcons finished among the top half of the competitors. Sophomore Travis Patterson (Simi Valley, Calif.) finished ninth with a time of 3:53.60, while senior Ben Payne came in at 3:55.32 to finish 13th. Junior Derek Storbeck (Wayne, N.J.) finished 23rd with a time of 4:01.72.
