Greg Stine Wins USAG All-Around Title

DENTON, Texas - With a combined-events score of 52.750, sophomore Greg Stine (Houston, Texas) won the all-around title at the USA Gymnastics Championships on Friday, April 9, in Denton, Texas. Backed by strong performances from Stine and senior Jeff Andersen (Marietta, Ga.), the Air Force men's gymnastics team finished third with a team score of 202.800. It is the second straight season that Air Force has claimed third-place honors.
Contributing to Stine's winning score were second-place finishes on the floor exercise (8.800), pommel horse (8.550) and high bar (8.875). He also finished tied for seventh on the still rings with an 8.900 and recorded a 9.125 on the vault to finish10th. It is the third-best high bar score of the season for Stine - and the third-best mark for the team - as well as the second-highest vault mark by a Falcon this season.
Andersen finished third in the all-around with a combined score of 51.600, backed by a first-place finish on the still rings with a 9.400. Andersen also finished third on the parallel bars with a season-high score of 8.700 and seventh on the high bar with an 8.500. This is the third year that Andersen has earned All-America honors in the all-around.
In addition to earning USAG All-America honors in the all-around, Stine and Andersen advance to the individual event finals tomorrow night - both competing in multiple events. Stine will compete in five of the six events - floor, pommel horse, still rings, vault and high bar. Andersen will compete as a Falcon for the final time on the still rings, parallel bars and high bar.
They will be joined by junior Kent Reichle (Cambridge, Minn.), who qualified for the finals of the floor exercise after posting a sixth-place score of 9.675 in tonight's preliminaries.
In the team standings, William and Mary successfully defended their USAG title, posting a score of 209.650, while Navy finished second with a team score of 205.300. Springfield placed fourth with a 202.300, while Southern Connecticut State rounded out the competition with a fifth-place finish of 193.825.
The Air Force trio will take to the competition floor tomorrow (April 10) at Pioneer Hall on the campus of Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas. The 2004 USA Gymnastics event finals will begin at 4 p.m., and run concurrently with the women's individual event finals.
