Caleb Pelger Takes Sixth in the MWC Decathlon

LAS VEGAS - Junior Caleb Pelger (Peabody, Mass.) set a personal-best decathlon total of 6,415 points to finish sixth at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday, May 13, in Las Vegas, Nev. Pelger was one of three Falcons to participate in the league's multi-event competition.
Pelger recorded two top-five finishes, including a fourth-place finish in the 1500-meter run, crossing the finish line in a time of 4:45.02. He also finished fifth in the pole vault with a height of 13'1?". Pelger finished sixth in the javelin throw (146'6"), seventh in the discus throw (105'3") and eighth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.79). Pelger's multi-event total is the seventh-best total in Academy history - and just two points shy of the sixth-place mark.
Freshman Brian Walsh (Redlands, Calif.) joined Pelger in the decathlon competition and finished eighth, with a total of 6,188 points. Walsh's day was highlighted by a first-place finish in the 1500-meter run, crossing the finish line in a best-time of 4:35.35. Also contributing to his decathlon score was an eighth-place finish in the pole vault (12'1?") and ninth-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles (16.79), discus throw (89'1") and javelin throw (139'9").
The Falcons had one competitor in the heptathlon, as freshman Dierra Poland (Deptford, N.J.) finished 11th with a seven-event total of 4,188 points. Contributing to her finish was a 15th-place mark of 15'3?" in the long jump and a 16th-place distance of 64'6" in the javelin throw. She also clocked a time of 2:38.16 in the 800-meter run to finish in 14th.
After one event, the men's team is currently in third-place, while the women's team is tied for seventh.
Action for the rest of the Falcons gets underway tomorrow (May 14) for the first day of individual event competition at the Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr Smith Field on the campus of UNLV. The first event is the women's discus, which will start at 10 a.m. PST.
