USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force sophomore Ryan McFadden became the first sprinter in program history to run a sub-12 in the 100-meter dash this afternoon (May 8), as the track and field team closed out the regular season hosting the Air Force Twilight Open at the Cadet Outdoor Complex.
With a winning time of 11.82, McFadden became the Falcons' first-ever sub-12 sprinter and deleted 0.18 seconds from the program and Sophomore Class standards she set earlier this spring. McFadden led the Air Force sprint squad to a major record book rewrite that included four of the seventh-fastest 100-meter times in Academy history.
Sophomore Sarah Reynolds posted the program's second sub-12 finish just 0.11 seconds after McFadden, as she clocked a time of 11.93 in a runner-up finish to take hold of the No. 2 spot in the Air Force Record Book. Junior Brooke Coleman lowered her time to 12.10, accounting for the fourth-fastest time in Academy history, while classmate Kayla Beach moved up to No. 7 on the program's all-time standings with a personal-best time of 12.14.
The 100-meter dash was one of two Air Force Top 10 performances for Beach on Friday, as the junior also improved her No. 2 all-time mark in the long jump with a career-best distance of 5.87 meters (19'3¼"). Beach was one of two 19-foot jumpers for the Falcons, as sophomore Alese Banks record a leap of 5.80 meters (19'0½") to help the Falcons to a 2-3 finish.
For the second time in less than a week, members of the men's 1500-meter squad made multiple additions to the Academy's all-time standings. Senior Ethan Ashley won the 21-runner event in a time of 3:50.71 – a 3:42.13 altitude-adjusted finish that is the 10th-fastest time in program history. The Falcons, who swept the top seven, also saw junior Joseph White improve his own No. 15 all-time mark to 3:42.79a during a runner-up finish and the duo of freshman Auge Martin and junior Patrick Lawson debut at No. 21 (3:44.62a) and No. 22 (3:44.82a), respectively, on the program's all-time standings.
The Falcons adjusted the Air Force Top 25 during 1-2 finishes in both the women's and men's pole vault. Freshman Julie Segroves cleared 13 feet for the fourth time in five meets to win the women's event with a 4.03-meter (13'2½"), while sophomore Barrett Boyd recorded a personal-best height of 3.75 meters (12'2¾") to finish second in the meet and move up to No. 17 on the program's all-time standings. Classmate James Vogel Jr. debuted at No. 25 on the men's list, as he won the competition with a clearance of 5.05 meters (16'6¾").
Freshman Arianna Valenzuela had a strong outing in her first home meet, as she moved up to No. 20 on the program's javelin standings (40.92m/134'5"), won the discus throw (33.98m/147'7") and added a top-three finish in the hammer throw (49.93m/163'10"). Sophomore Trenton Groff also recorded an Air Force No. 20 ranking in the javelin during his first home meet, as he won the men's event with a distance of 62.59 meters (205'4").
From the throwing circles, senior Texas Tanner (59.79m/196'2") led the men to a 1-2-3 finish in the discus throw (sophomore Evan Keefe: 53.20m/174'6"; senior Massimo Grisotto: 50.20m/164'8"), while junior Pagie Birch finished second in the hammer (53.17m/174'5"), freshman Mackenzie Fah won the all-Air Force women's shot put (13.16m/43'2¼") and sophomore Trevin Jordan was the top collegiate finisher (second overall) in the men's shot put with a discus of 16.89 meters (55'5").
Elsewhere, the Falcons earned first-place finishes from sophomore Christopher Johnson (400-meter dash: 48.81), classmate Ella Pears (triple jump: 11.67m/38'3½") and senior Jettason Rose (100-meter dash: 10.22), while senior Ricky Fetterolf (1500-meter run: 4:42.88), freshman Eleanor Borchard (400-meter hurdles: 62.15) and sophomore Morgan Glaser (high jump: 1.80m/5'10 ¾") were the top collegiate finishers (second overall) in their respective events.
With the regular season now complete, the Falcons turn their attention to Championship Season, which begins next week (May 14-16) at the Credit Union 1 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Clovis, California.
