Sanders Leads Air Force Past Army, 1-0

Air Force sophomore Josh Sanders scored the only goal of the game and goalie Paul Elsbernd posted the first shutout of his career Friday as the Falcon men's soccer team defeated service-academy rival Army, 1-0, at the Jim 'N Nick's/PUMA BSC Fall Classic. Air Force improves to 2-0-1 while the Black Knights fall to 1-2 in the first meeting between the two teams since 1993.
Sanders notched his second goal of the season in the 11th minute, taking a crossing pass from sophomore Brendan Greenaway and heading it past Army goalie Matt Wesmiller. It was Greenaway's first point of his career, while Sanders now leads the team in scoring with five points (2g, 1a).
Air Force was forced to play down a man for the last 28 minutes of the game after junior Clay McGillivray received a red card in the 62nd minute. He will sit out Sunday's game against Birmingham-Southern. Army narrowly missed tying the score twice in the second half as Chase Hunter hit the crossbar in the 50th minute and William Swearingen hit the post in the 87th minute.
The Falcons had the upper hand in nearly every statistical category in the first half, but Army controlled the play in the second stanza. The Black Knights outshot Air Force, 23-16, in total shots and held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Elsbernd made six saves, including five in the first half, for his first career shutout. His final save, and only one of the second half, came with 1:20 left in the game off a shot from Swearingen. Wesmiller had four saves for Army.
