USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force volleyball team dropped a three-game set to its I-25 rival, Denver, on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Academy. Without a single Falcon registering double-digits in the kills column, Air Force fell 30-21, 30-26, 30-24 to the visiting Pioneers. Although the Falcons have dropped the last two matches to Denver, Air Force continues to lead the all-time series, 32-9.
Denver started the match with a quick 3-0 run, but the Falcons quickly regrouped to match the score at three. Freshman Jasamine Pettie (Baton Rouge, La.) put down the team's first kill at the 4-4 mark, but Denver responded with six straight points of their own. The Falcons tried to regroup, but ultimately dropped the match 30-21.
The second set was eerily similar to the first, as DU jumped out to a 3-0 lead and the Falcons responded to match the game at four. This time, the tying score came from Kristina Stewart (Glendale, Ariz.) who served up an ace (tying for the team lead with 27 on the season). From there, Air Force marched out to a 15-9 lead in part to serving streaks by Brooke Akers (Desert Hot Springs, Calif.) and Rebecca Gallegos (Las Vegas, N.M.). The Pioneers tied things up at 18 and the two teams traded points until DU went ahead for good at the 23-22 mark. The Falcons remained close, but Denver went on to win 30-26.
The third game found Air Force in a quick 10-3 hole that quickly escalated to a 22-9 deficit. A kill by Briana Thomas (Grass Valley, Calif.) sparked a run by the Falcons, who claimed 15 points while holding the Pioneers to just eight. With several kills from Kristin Hamlett (Escondido, Calif.), the Falcons pulled within five at the 26-21 mark and again at the 29-24 point, but Denver went on to claim the 30-24 set.
Gallegos led the Falcons with nine kills -- just one shy of the match's best output. Akers and Hamlett each rang up eight, while Pettie added in seven. Carly Siefken (Beaverton, Ore.) added 23 assists and an ace to her stat line, as well as a team-best six digs. Hamlett also registered a pair of solo stops, in addition to two assisted ones, while Akers notched in a solo block of her own. Thomas posted the team's best hitting percentage as she connected on three of her four attempts.
The Falcons return to Mountain West Conference action this Friday (Oct. 21), when they host Colorado State at 7 p.m., in the Cadet East Gym.
