The 50-year gymnastic reunion is quickly approaching. The reunion committee continues to meet and plan the events. Many thanks to those who are giving their time to help with our reunion: Garry Dudley, Dennis Ramsey, Cher Ramsey, Lou Burkel, "O" Sampson, Phil Stone, Mary Kay Stone, Kip Simons, Holly Tedeschi, Tammy Ritchie and Chuck Schweiss.
The reunion will run from March 24th through March 26th, 2006. We expect participants to begin arriving on Thursday, March 23rd. Reunion headquarters and lodging will be at the Academy Hotel on North Academy Boulevard just outside Academy's south entrance.
Our reunion is occurring in conjunction with the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnastics Championship. Both our men's and women's teams will compete in the event hosted by USAFA. Friday night features the women's competition and Saturday night the men's competition. Prior to one of the competitions we will conduct an "old timers" handstand competition. The committee decided not to have other events due to injuries sustained at the last reunion (names withheld to prevent chastising). We will also conduct a "march on" both evenings after the competitions. The "march on" will be former gymnasts, coaches and friends by decade. The championship awards both evenings will be presented by former gymnasts.
Following the competitions each evening, the reunion will reconvene at the Academy hotel for food and beverage. Based on the last reunion, we will all be telling stories and catching up on each other's lives. The committee decided not to have a formal dinner. All members felt the dinner would take away precious time from the attendees who want to renew friendships, etc.
Other events for the reunion include a golf tournament Friday morning, a Saturday morning briefing by Academy officials on our Air Force Academy, Saturday afternoon "4 year" class get togethers and a Sunday ski trip. The weather that time of the year can be either beautiful or just plain terrible. Should we cancel the golf tournament, we will have some type of golf contest in the field house. "O" Sampson is arranging the briefing by Academy officials. We hope to have someone from the AOG, Supt's office, Comm's office and the athletic department (we are working to get Dr. Mueh the athletic director). The "4 year" get togethers will be hosted by members of the year groups in the local area (probably their homes). The Sunday ski trip will consist of a charter bus to a ski area and a full day of skiing. Arrangements will be made for group rentals at the ski area.
You can see that in 3 days we have plenty of fun and interaction. Look for reunion merchandise and a CD with pictures from all 50 years. Currently 72 people have confirmed they will attend the event, 33 haven't decided and 6 are unable to attend. Those 72 people will bring spouses, etc with a total of 147 participants at this time. We need your help to increase participation. The Air Force Gymnastics Media Guide lists 374 all-time letter winners. Not listed are the many friends, trainers, managers and family of our Air Force Gymnastics community.
Please email or call those friends, trainers, managers and family you participated with in gymnastics. Direct them to this page by clicking here and copy the link. Or simply send them to www.airforcesports.com then have them click on to "Teams" on the front banner and then select either men or women's gymnastics. Within the next few weeks you will receive an email with those names we have contact information for. Please call, write or email them to encourage reunion participation.
In December, you will receive registration information. The reunion committee welcomes your suggestions. Please email Chuck Schweiss (charles.schweiss@usafa.af.mil) with your comments and suggestions. See you in March 2006 for a great 50 Year USAFA Gymnastics Reunion.
