Brian Navin and Marcos Gonzales Claim Victories at Detroit

DETROIT, Mich. -- Sophomore Brian Navin and senior Marcos Gonzales picked up victories over a pair of Navy athletes, as the Air Force boxing team took on its service academy rivals at the prestigious Detroit Athletic Club on Friday (Oct. 28).
Navin earned a victory over Navy's Jonathon Liang in a 136-pound contest when the referee stopped the contest in the third round. Gonzales picked up a decision from BJ Richardson in a 150-pound bout.
For his hard-fought decision over Richardson, Gonzales was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week. Sticking to his plan, Gonzales cut off the ring for his elusive opponent. Finding his range as the bout wore on, Gonzales landed some nice combinations, en route to the decision.
"This was his first real action since last year's Wing Open finals," head coach Eddie Weichers said following the contest. "I thought Marcos looked sharp and focused. He displayed a cool presence in the ring versus a difficult opponent. His composure was the key to his victory."
Three other Falcons also competed at the DAC, dropping two contests to Army and another one to Navy. Junior Joe Conrad's 165-pound match with Army's Matt Pride ended in the third round, when the referee stopped the bout. Junior Colin LaFavor lost a decision to Army's Reggie Smith at 185 pounds, while senior Oscar Casillas was decisioned by Navy's Greg Watten in the a 195-pound contest.
"All of the matches were quite competitive," Weichers continued. "It's a great experience for the academies to be able to compete in such a classy club for a sold-out event. The members appreciate the service academies and the sacrifices that our cadets make to their country."
Air Force and Army meet up again this Friday (Nov. 4), when the Falcons host the Black Knights in the annual competition that coincides with the Air Force-Army football game. Action will begin at 4:30 in the Cadet Gym Upper Boxing Room.
