SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Air Force volleyball team dropped a three-game match to San Diego State in Mountain West Conference action on Saturday (Oct. 29) in San Diego, Calif. The Aztecs claimed the season sweep of the Falcons by 30-19, 30-22, 30-13 scores.
The Aztecs struck first, but Air Force quickly evened the score and took the lead on a kill by senior Rebecca Gallegos (Las Vegas, N.M.). San Diego State rolled off 11 points, while allowing Air Force just three, securing the early 11-6 lead. Following a Falcons' timeout, Air Force pulled within three, thanks in part to another kill from Gallegos and several Aztec errors. San Diego State used another long serving streak to retain the lead as Air Force fell 30-19.
Air Force got down an early 11-2 in the second set, but refused to give up. Gallegos and classmate Kristin Hamlett (Escondido, Calif.) each added a kill and a service ace, as the Falcons climbed back within a 15-10 margin. Sophomore Brooke Akers (Desert Hot Springs, Calif.) and senior Briana Thomas (Grass Valley, Calif.) teamed up for a block and freshman Jasamine Pettie (Baton Rouge, La.) put down a kill as the Falcons pulled within three at 17-14. Hamlett notched another kill to bring the comeback to within two (20-18), but San Diego State pulled ahead once again to take the 30-22 win.
A block by Hamlett and Gallegos, as well as an ace by Carly Siefken (Beaverton, Ore.) helped Air Force to the early 3-1 lead, but San Diego State rolled off nine straight points to take the 11-3 advantage. Hamlett collected back-to-back service aces to bring the score within five, but the Aztecs quickly regained a sizable lead. Hamlett posted another pair of kills, but San Diego State picked up the third game with a 30-13 win.
Gallegos led the Falcons with seven kills, while Hamlett posted six. Siefken, who connected on 2-of-3 attempts, led the team with .333 hitting percentage -- one of just two Falcons to hit better than .000 in the match. Kim Kallabis (Camino, Calif.) posted a team-best 14 assists, while Hamlett led the team with three aces. Rebecca Gerton (San Leandro, Calif.) topped the team with six digs, while Gallegos and Hamlett led the team with two assisted blocks.
The Falcons return to the Academy next weekend for a pair of matches. Air Force wraps up the non-conference slate, hosting North Dakota State on Friday (Nov. 4), before taking on Mountain West Conference newcomer TCU in a Sunday (Nov. 6) afternoon match-up.
