Reception Errors Upend Falcons in Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Committing 20 reception errors, the Air Force volleyball team dropped a four-game match to Mountain West Conference newcomer TCU on Friday, Oct. 7. After dropping the first set, 30-22, the Falcons rebounded for a 30-28 win in the second game. Unable to overcome the Horned Frogs' serving, the Falcons dropped the final two games by 30-18 and 30-15 margins.
TCU took the first two points and built up a 9-4 advantage, but the Falcons came charging back behind an ace from Carly Siefken (Beaverton, Ore.), as well as kills from Rebecca Gallegos (Las Vegas, N.M.) and Kristina Stewart (Glendale, Ariz.). A huge block from Kristin Hamlett (Escondido, Calif.) tied up the score at nine. The Horned Frogs rallied for another lead, but the Falcons continued to score. Behind kills from Gallegos, Hamlett and Brooke Akers (Desert Hot Springs, Calif.), the Falcons pulled the score to within two at 24-22. Unfortunately for the Blue and Silver, TCU collected the final six points to take the 30-22 win.
Gallegos and Akers gave the Falcons the first two points of the second set and teamed up again to give the Falcons a 4-1 lead. The Frogs tied it at four and took the lead on the ensuing point, but Air Force roared back with the next points to take the 10-5 lead. The Falcons' run was backed by kills from Akers, Siefken and Gallegos, as well as an ace from Rebecca Gerton (San Leandro, Calif.). TCU regained the lead and extended it to 15-12. With two kills and a solo block, Akers sparked an Air Force drive to regain the lead at 16-15. The Falcons held off several TCU scoring streaks and a kill by Hamlett secured the Falcons' 30-28 win.
Air Force earned the first point of the third, but a 9-1 run by TCU. Hamlett and Pettie teamed up fro a block, while Hamlett added an ace during the opening minutes, but they were unable to overcome the Frogs. Down 20-9, Air Force collected six straight points with help from Akers and Gallegos. Akers added two more kills and assisted on a block with Hamlett, but the Falcons fell 30-18. The Falcons again found themselves in a 6-1 hole following the start of the fourth game. Despite a pair of aces from Gerton and Kim Kallabis (Camino, Calif.), the Falcons dropped the final decision, 30-15.
With 10 kills, Akers was the only Falcon to clear the double-digit plateau. She also added a pair of solo stops and assisted on two others. Gerton led the Falcons with 13 digs, while tallying up a pair of aces. Hamlett also recorded two aces and Siefken added 22 assists, while collecting 12 digs.
Air Force continues it road swing next weekend, as it travels to Utah for a pair of matches. The Falcons will take on nationally-ranked BYU in Provo on Friday, Oct. 14, before heading to Salt Lake City on Saturday, Oct. 15, to face Utah. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
