Falcons Fall to San Jose State in Four

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force volleyball team closed out the Falcon Invitational with a 3-1 loss to San Jose State to finish fourth in the home tournament on Saturday, Sept. 3. After dropping the first set 30-21, Air Force rebounded for a 30-26 victory. Unfortunately for the Falcons, the Spartans picked up 30-16 and 30-27 wins to secure the third-place spot.
Air Force picked up the first points of the opening set, but several runs by SJSU put the Falcons at a disadvantage. San Jose State battled the Falcons in the opening minutes of the second game, swapping points and trading ties. After a 10-10 deadlock, Air Force pulled away from SJSU backed by 16 kills on 22 attempts, while committing just four errors.
Errors were costly in third set, as Air Force had 10 in comparison to just 11 kills. While the Falcons struggled for a rhythm, San Jose State hit .520 (15 kills -- 2 errors -- 25 attempts) to walk away with the 30-16 game and keep the Falcons below the 20-point plateau for the first time all season.
Air Force and San Jose State once again traded points in the fourth game, as neither team was willing to give up a large lead. The back and fourth battle continued until the Spartans were able to pull away following a 27-27 tie and take the win.
Senior Kristin Hamlett (Escondido, Calif.) tied for the match lead with 20 kills, while sophomore Brooke Akers (Desert Hot Springs, Calif.) put down 13. Freshman Kristina Stewart (Glendale, Ariz.) led the team with 11 digs, while senior Carly Siefken (Beaverton, Ore.) recorded 49 assists. Hamlett also led the team with seven total blocks, including two solo and five assisted stops. Akers also notched a pair of solo blocks, while assisting on three others. As a team, team, the Falcons combined for 16 assisted stops.
Hamlett and Akers were named to the Falcon Invitational all-tournament following their play over the two days of competition. They were joined on the team by Butler's Megan Knightly, San Jose State's Colleen Burke, Southeast Missouri State's Sirma Ozenir, Weber State's Leah Burnmeister and Taylor Reineke and Audra Jeffers of tournament-winner and 10th-ranked Wisconsin.
The Falcons return to action next weekend (Sept. 9-10), when they travel to Ogden, Utah, for the Weber State Invitational. While there, Air Force will face Northwestern State, Utah Valley State and host Weber State.
