The University of New Mexico men's soccer team used goals from three different players and a stifling defense to defeat Air Force, 3-1, Sunday at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the victory, New Mexico improved to 6-3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Falcons fell to 2-7-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.
UNM's Bryan Sajjadi snapped a scoreless tie with 36 seconds remaining in the first half with his first goal of the season after taking a pass from Chris Wright and firing a 12-yard shot past Falcon goalie Brian Guyette. The goal snapped Guyette's scoreless streak at 278 minutes and 36 seconds. UNM outshot the Falcons 11-0 in the first half, with three of them on goal.
Joey Vitagliano put the Lobos up 2-0 in the 66th minute when he headed in a corner kick from Brandon Barklage. The corner kick flew by several players, bounced once and Vitagliano put it away for his first goal of the season.
Air Force freshman Josh Rhynard cut the lead in half with his fourth tally of the season, and first in seven games. He received a centering pass from junior Ian Hauck in the 76th minute and placed a shot from eight yards out past UNM keeper Mike Graczyk. It was the Falcons' first shot on goal in the game. Unfortunately for Air Force, they could muster just one more shot on goal, which was saved by Graczyk. UNM held a 23-6 advantage in total shots and an 8-2 margin in shots on goal.
P.J. Wilson scored an insurance goal for the Lobos in the 84th minute. Graczyk started the play with a goal kick that Wright headed forward to Wilson, whose 16-yard shot from Guyette's left found the far post.
Despite the disparity in shots, each team had six corner kicks and UNM had 16 fouls, compared to 15 for Air Force.
The Falcons continue play in the MPSF on Saturday, Oct. 7, when they host the University of Denver at 7 p.m.
