FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Alaska goalie Chad Johnson stopped all19 shots he faced as the Nanooks beat Air Force, 3-0, in a non-conference college hockey game, Friday, Oct. 13, at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Air Force fell to 1-2 on the season while Alaska improved to 1-0.
The teams skated to a scoreless first period, but the Nanooks out-shot the Falcons, 8-2. Falcon goalie Peter Foster made three power-play saves in the final 30 seconds of the opening period to keep the teams deadlocked at 0-0. Air Force killed nearly five minutes of penalties in the first period.
UAF got on the board just seconds after the Falcons killed a Nanook power play early in the second period. UAF forward Curtis Fraser scored at the 1:39 mark of the second period from Darcy Campbell and Kyle Jones.
Shortly after the goal, Air Force had 90 seconds of a 5-on-3 opportunity, but was unable to score or get a shot on net. The Falcons out-shot the Nanooks, 8-5, in the period, but UAF took a 1-0 lead into the second intermission.
Alaska scored twice in the third period to secure the victory. The first came from Kyle Greentree on the power play at the 11:56 mark. Then with less than a minute remaining, the Nanooks scored another power-play goal as Fraser scored his second goal of the game from Nathan Fornataro and Campbell.
Alaska out-shot Air Force, 22-19, in the game. The Falcons had an 8-5 advantage in the second period, but couldn't get one past Johnson. Each team had nine shots in the third period.
Alaska was 2-for-8 on the power play while Air Force was 0-for-5. Foster made 19 saves for the Falcons.
The same two teams conclude the two-game series Saturday, Oct. 14, in Fairbanks.
