Falcons Conclude 2006 Fall Season At Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate

The Air Force golf team concludes the 2006 fall season this week, Oct. 30-31, when they head to Las Cruces, N.M., to take part in the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate. The 54-round tournament, which will begin with 7:30 shotgun starts each morning, is being held at the par-72, 7,074-yard NMSU Golf Course.
Scouting the Falcons...
Air Force is coming off its 12th-straight title at the Service Academy Golf Classic, finishing at 1094 (+14), 11 strokes ahead of second-place Army.
Leading the Falcons to the SAGC title was freshman Tom Whitney, who earned medalist honors with a three-round score of 210. Whitney became the first Air Force medalist at the event since Adam Wasinger in 2002.
In addition, senior Tyler Goulding turned in his best finish at the event, coming in second at 215 (-1), while three other Air Force golfers--Shaun O'Bryant, Chad Follett and Andrew Gibson--also placed in the top 10.
Rounding out the group for Air Force were Matt Tanis, Jared Freeman and Bob Whitney.
The Field...
The Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate will feature 13 teams, including Mountain West Conference foe New Mexico. The complete field is listed below, with the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings in parentheses: Air Force (142), Arizona (64), Ball State (116), Miami (OH) (197), Nebraska (72), New Mexico (71), New Mexico State (121), Odessa College, San Jose State (61), Texas (57), UTEP (120), Weber State (153) and Western New Mexico State.
Falcons In the Record Book...
With its performances at the Falcon Invitational, Wolf Pack Classic and District 7 Shootout, Air Force made a few new entries in the program's record books. Air Force's team score of 864 at both the Falcon Invitational and District 7 Shootout ranks second on the list of lowest team scores (54-holes) in school history, while its score of 875 at the Wolf Pack Classic is tied for ninth in the record books.
Meanwhile, freshman Tom Whitney and senior Tyler Goulding both made their marks on the individual record book in those three tournaments. Whitney and Goulding both are tied for ninth place on the individual list with their scores of 211 at the Falcon Invitational and Wolf Pack Classic, respectively. Whitney also fired a 213 at the Wolf Pack Classic to tie for 14th, while Goulding fired a 214 at the Falcon Invitational to rank tied for 21st on the individual list. Both golfers also fired a 214 at the District 7 Shootout as well. Whitney bested his low round at the Service Academy Golf Classic, finishing a 210, tying for fifth on the individual list.
Both Whitney and Goulding made impressions on the Air Force record book in other ways--Whitney's third-round score of 66 at Eisenhower is tied for the lowest in Air Force history.
Meanwhile, Goulding has now shot 214 or better 11 times in his career, more than any other Air Force golfer.
Up Next...
With the fall season under wraps, the Falcons do not return to action until Feb. 19-20, when they head to the UTSA Intercollegiate in San Antonio, Texas.
