Air Force Opens Season with Impressive Win Over Navy

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Taking five of eight bouts from service-academy rival Navy, the Air Force boxing team kicked off the 2006-07 season with an impressive debut on Friday, Oct. 6, at the Academy. With the capacity of the Upper Boxing Room at its limit, the young Falcons quickly made their statement for the upcoming season.
Air Force set the tone of the contest in the first round, as sophomore Dean Chuva dismissed Navy's Huy Truong in the 120-pound bout. Earning several standing-eight counts behind an impressive performance in the ring, Chuva claimed his first collegiate victory.
Classmate Nicholas Goc picked up right where Chuva left off, using a flurry of strikes to decision Midshipman Jonathon Liang in the 138-pound match-up. Fellow sophomore Sean May took the decision over Navy's Ruben Zweiben at 150 pounds to earn his first collegiate victory against non-Air Force Academy personnel.
In a very back-and-forth contest, Navy's BJ Richardson took a split-decision from sophomore Rudy Bowen at 152 pounds, while junior Daryn Nelson won the 160-pound contest over Midshipman Cannon Pattillo by decision.
Navy won the next two contests, as the contenders moved into the heavier weight classes. Navy's Matt Cox decisioned sophomore Andrew Catoire at 185 pounds, while Midshipman Alex Rios took a victory by decision from senior Dustin Mayne.
In the final match of the evening, junior John Quinn secured the Falcons' team victory as he decisioned Navy's Dan Tarpey at 195 pounds.
Air Force returns to the ring next week as it hosts the first of six rounds of Friday Night Fights. The first contest is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., on Oct. 13, in the Cadet Gym Upper Boxing Room.
