Batchelder, Dunn Lead Falcons in Loss at UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Air Force volleyball team dropped a three-game set to UNLV on Friday, Nov. 10, at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nev. The Falcons fell in straight 30-22, 30-14, 30-17 sets to the host Rebels.

Freshman Katie Batchelder led the Falcons with nine kills, while senior Tara Dunn accounted for a career-best seven. Dunn, who connected on seven of 20 attempts, while committing just three errors, led the squad with a .200 hitting percentage. Sophomore Ellen Bina accounted for two of Air Force's six service aces, while junior Kim Kallabis led the Falcons with 24 assists and eight digs.

Air Force ran out to an early 5-1 lead, behind a pair of kills from Batchelder. Freshman Michelle Harrington added an ace, while sophomore Jasamine Pettie tacked on a kill during that run. UNLV pulled within two, but Dunn and sophomore Kristina Stewart posted kills to double up the Falcons' lead (8-4). Stewart added an ace, but the Rebels soon tied the score at 11. Batchelder's kill regained the Falcons' lead, but UNLV responded with the next three points to take the 14-12 lead. Harrington brought Air Force within one (17-16), but UNLV quickly advanced its lead to 24-19. A kill from Pettie led Air Force past the 20-point mark, but UNLV went on to take the set, 30-22.

UNLV struck first in the second game and quickly rolled out to a three-point lead. The Rebels continued to double-up the Falcons, despite kills from Batchelder, Pettie and Dunn. Freshman Hannah Sorber dropped an ace right before the baseline, but UNLV held the strong advantage. Harrington put down an overpass and Dunn added another kill, but UNLV closed out the game on a 5-0 run to claim the set, 30-14.

The Rebels also struck first in the third set, jumping out to a 3-1 lead. Dunn clocked the first kill of the set for the Falcons and junior Rebecca Gerton added an ace. Batchelder and Pettie added kills, but UNLV took the 16-9 advantage. Bina put up a pair of back-to-back aces to keep the Falcons within 10, but UNLV took the final game by a 30-17 margin.

Air Force concludes the road slate of the 2006 conference season at San Diego State on Sunday, Nov. 12. The Falcons and Aztecs will face one another at 12:00 p.m. (PST) in Johnson Arena.
